About Us
With more than 5,000 students, 600 faculty and staff, and close to 31,000 alumni, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is among the largest colleges at NC State University.
We promote critical thinking, cross-cultural competence, and engagement across the state and around the world. We prepare students for leadership in professions and occupations that require intellectual flexibility, outstanding communication skills, broad knowledge of the world, and a sophisticated understanding of human beings and their challenges.
Our academic departments encompass the liberal arts and the social sciences. Our students and faculty are engaged in exciting scholarship and research. And our alumni continue to make us proud.

About CHASS
CHASS offers degrees in a wide range of majors, from traditional courses of study in the liberal arts and social sciences to interdisciplinary and dual degree options.
For example, undergraduates can earn an International Studies degree and focus on global perspectives. Or you can study Science, Technology, and Society to explore how science and technology shape our culture, values, and institutions. Students in our linguistics and public history programs conduct research that helps preserve North Carolina's rich culture and heritage.
At the graduate level, we boast not only the oldest sociology doctoral program in the South, first awarded in 1926, but also a young MFA in Creative Writing that's garnering national attention and a unique PhD program in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media that integrates the written, oral, and visual modes of communicating.
CHASS graduates are engaged in the world around them. They are our elected officials, our business owners and our CEOs, our doctors, lawyers, judges, and counselors, our social workers, explorers, writers, researchers, and teachers. CHASS graduates are our future.
