PS 498 "Crime Analysis"

This course examines crime analysis in law enforcement applications. Students will gain a basic conceptual understanding of ways of thinking about crime and public safety problems - and how crime analysis may contribute to addressing these issues.

There is demand for high quality crime analysis in law enforcement because of increased interest in data-driven decisions. The availability of data and technology enables us to carry out crime analysis; however, the most useful analyses require in-depth and critical thinking about public safety problems. Crime analysis also requires knowledge about major theories of crime, and basic skills in collecting and managing data, and analytical and statistical techniques.

This online course focuses on real world applications of crime analysis. Students will also gain a basic conceptual understanding of ways of thinking about crime and public safety problems. The class is oriented to the generalist, and will not require any sophisticated statistical analyses. Persons who successfully complete this course will receive three hours of college credit from North Carolina State University.

Course taught by Deborah Lamm Weisel, Ph.D., a national expert on problem orientated policing and analysis. She has worked with law enforcement agencies across the nation on public safety problems including drug dealing, graffiti, speeding, burglary and gangs.

PS 298 "Legal Issues in Law Enforcement"
