The Campus Writing and Speaking Program was established
in the late 1990's to respond to a growing interest - among faculty and
administrators at NC State, business leaders in the region, and students
themselves - in ways to enhance undergraduate's experiences with writing
and speaking in every classroom across our large and diverse institution.
Our program is among a very few across the nation in our class of institution
to integrate writing and speaking across the curriculum. Through a variety
of current events and activities,
we are reaching this goal. Click here

"CWSP:
A National Leader in Cross-Curricular Innovation", is a PDF document
discussing our mission and activities in more detail.

History
The Campus Writing and Speaking Program was established in July
1997 to provide leadership for NC State as it implements its General
Education Requirements which state that "each curriculum is designed
so that upper-level courses and other programmatic experiences
help students write and speak competently in the disciplines."

Mission
The CWSP is a direct response to NC State's commitment to improve
its graduates' writing and speaking abilities and incorporating
writing and speaking into the classroom as powerful tools for
teaching and learning in all curricula. At the center of the Program's
many goals and services is support for engaging students as active
participants in learning their subject matter, the ways of thinking
that define their discipline, and the conventions of discourse
that will define them as professionals in their fields. [back

Institutional Location
The Campus Writing and Speaking Program is housed for budgetary purposes in the
College of Humanities and Social Sciences, but it is centrally funded and supports undergraduate programs in nine colleges of NC State University. The CWSP collaborates
with several other campus groups such as the Faculty Center for
Teaching and Learning, undergraduate tutorial services, the Departments
of English and Communication, and the 10 other colleges on campus.
The CWSP is advised by an interdisciplinary Campus Writing and
Speaking Board. [back to index]
